Year 2 News & World Book Day
How lovely to have had some sunshine last week! In Year 2 we have started our new topic, “How has art represented our lives?”. We are looking at how art can represent things that are popular within our culture and how not everyone likes the same things even if they are popular. We will have a particular focus on the style of Pop Art and how it represents the British culture.
In English we have been reading the book, ‘Dragon Post’. Hopefully you all received your postcards in the post; the children were so excited to put them in the postbox! We have been practising letter writing in all forms, including writing a text message and an email! World Book Day was brilliant- the children looked amazing in their dressing up outfits! The children enjoyed making bookmarks, designed a front cover of a book and took part in a whole school parade.
In Maths, we have been learning about division, both the grouping and sharing method. They have been using their times table knowledge to use the inverse operation (10÷2 and 2x5). We are then applying our knowledge to real-life problems.
Our PE sessions this half term are Handball and Tennis. They have been practising catching and throwing techniques, applying them in a game situation. In Tennis, they are understanding the game of copycat to practise reacting to an opponent’s moves and learning basic tennis racquet skills.
Computing
This half term Year 2 have spent the first 2 weeks designing and creating their own space race project in Scratch Jnr. They created their designs on paper first, choosing appropriate artwork for their project, decided how each sprite would move and then created algorithms for each sprite. The children then followed their designs and algorithms to program the animations in Scratch Jnr on the iPads.
They all did a fantastic job with the whole process. For the rest of this half term they will be moving on to their unit on Physical Computing using our amazing Sphero Bolt Robots. They will be learning how to drive the robots around an obstacle course and then move on to learn how to programme them using the draw canvas where they will draw a path on an iPad that Sphero will follow on the floor.
